Quick answer
Marble etching is a dull, lighter mark left when an acid such as lemon juice, wine or vinegar dissolves the calcium carbonate in the stone. It happens within seconds to minutes, affects marble, limestone, travertine and onyx most, and cannot be prevented by anything that soaks into the stone. The only reliable prevention is a physical barrier over the surface, which is what our Stone Protection Film is.

What etching looks like
On polished marble, an etch looks like a dull or cloudy patch that stands out when light hits the benchtop at an angle. Glass rings, drip trails and the outline of a lemon wedge are classic shapes. On honed marble etches are less obvious but can appear as slightly darker or smoother spots.

Simple test: put a drop of lemon juice on an offcut or hidden spot, wait five minutes, wipe it off and look at the surface at an angle. A dull mark means the stone etches.
How to prevent etching
- Protection film (most reliable). An optically clear film sits over the stone so acids never touch it. It also blocks stains and light scratches. See our films.
- Everyday habits. Use chopping boards, coasters and trays, and wipe spills straight away.
- pH-neutral cleaners. Avoid vinegar, lemon-based and many all-purpose sprays on unprotected stone.
- What does not work. Sealers slow stains but cannot stop etching, and anti-etch liquid coatings wear away and need redoing. Sealer vs film compared.
Fixing existing etches
Light etches on polished marble can be polished out by a stone restorer. Deeper damage needs honing and re-polishing. We recommend restoring first, then applying film to lock in the finish. More questions answered in our FAQ.
